The homeowner’s loved the mountain-side location of their house and
their awesome neighbours, but not the 1980s vinyl siding, dated interior
and compartmentalized layout. Rather than move, the project goal was to
completely re-invent the existing house and create a West Coast home
that would support an active family and be a hub for neighbourhood
gatherings.
The entire house was stripped back to the studs
and walls were opened up and moved to create an open floorplan. On the
upper level, a great room was created featuring a custom fir kitchen
with backpainted glass backsplash, a bespoke wine-display rack and
vertical wood slat-screens. To bring in more light and create a sense of
space, the ceiling was vaulted above the island and a massive skylight
added incorporating the existing structural ceiling joists.
The
family bathroom features a steam shower with backpainted glass details,
a fir vanity, black slate flooring and customizable lighting and sound
options.
The staircase was rebuilt with clean-lined white oak
treads, frameless glass and wood slat guards, and a series of pull-out
storage bays concealed below the staircase.
System upgrades
included: upgraded lighting and whole house audio / visual, exterior
insulation, new windows and doors including a custom entry door and
frosted glass garage doors, and new decks, landscaping and other
details.
On the exterior, vinyl siding and brick veneer were
removed to make way for cedar siding and black rundle stone. The
dramatic stone chimney anchors the house and is capped with a custom
metal shroud.
